Captain Jordan Monocandilos was born in Greece and received his education
at the Merchant Marine Academy in Hydra, Greece. After graduating,
he sailed worldwide advancing from apprentice deck officer to chief
officer and master (unlimited tonnage) on tankers, bulk carriers,
general cargo, refrigerated and passenger vessels from 1956 to 1969.
He came to
Miami in 1969 and joined with E.P. Bernuth, owner of New York based
Bernuth Lembke. Equipped with Bernuth's finances and Capt. Monocandilos'
experience and tireless effort, Bernuth Marine Shipping and Bernuth
Agencies developed into a dynamic agency and stevedoring concern.
Capt. Monocandilos
and Bernuth worked together building the agency until Bernuth's
death. In the years suceeding his partner's death, the Captain continued
to expand the Bernuth companies. He also formed a network of businesses
related to the maritime industry that complemented the agency's
services.
Some of these include a trucking company, a marine mechanical repair
shop, welding services, and a tugboat company.
Apart from
his involvement in marine transportation, Captain Monocandilos was
also an investor of Commercial Trust Bank. From 1988-1994 he served
on the loan committee, executive committee and board of directors
assisting in expanding the bank's holdings from approximately $23
million to $130 million. Commercial Trust was sold to Intercontinental
Bank in 1994.
In 1999, the
Captain embarked Bernuth on a bulkshipping venture. The management
and operation of two handysize bulk carriers have further broadened
the group's scope. These vessels are employed in the bulk grain
trade between U.S. Gulf ports and Latin America.
Captain Monocandilos'
other holdings include extensive accreage along the Miami River
and surrounding areas and residential real estate in Marco Island,
FL and Steamboat Springs, CO. He serves as a trustee of the Greater
Miami Chamber of Commerce and is an active member of the Propeller
Club of the United States, the Miami City Club and the Key Biscayne
Yacht Club. Captain Monocandilos is also a member and supporter
of St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Church.
